Sister of Mercy Gertrude Skelly (formerly Sister M. James Edward) died Jan. 9, 2019. She was 96 years old.

Sister Skelly entered the congregation in 1944 from her home parish of St. Patrick Church, Owego. She earned a bachelor’s degree in secretarial science and a minor in economics from Nazareth College.

After teaching first grade at St. Charles Borromeo School, Greece, Sister Skelly taught in the business departments at Our Lady of Mercy High School, Brighton, and Notre Dame High School, Elmira, for many years. She returned to her home parish and was administrator and teacher at St. Patrick School, Owego.

Following her teaching career, Sister Skelly became an accountant at the Episcopal Church Home, Rochester, where she ministered for 21 years. Later, she was a Stephen Minister for St. Louis Church, Pittsford, while also working in the finance office of the Sisters of Mercy. She did volunteer work for Our Lady of Lourdes Parish, Notre Dame High School and St. Joseph Hospital in Elmira.

Her funeral liturgy was celebrated at the Mercy Center chapel in Brighton on Jan. 11, 2019, with burial at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery, Rochester.
