Mercy Sister Mary Leonard Gavin at 94

Mercy Sister Mary Leonard Gavin died March 8, 2003, at the Sisters of Mercy Motherhouse in Brighton. She was 94 and was a member of the order for 67 years.

Born Dorothy Gavin in Rochester, Sister Leonard entered the Sisters of Mercy from Immaculate Conception Parish in 1935, professing her perpetual vows in 1941. She ministered in food preparation for 45 years, serving at Mercy High School, Cardinal Mooney High School and St. James Parish, all in Rochester, and at St. Mary’s in Corning. She is survived by nieces and nephews, including Valerie Sweeney of California, and her sisters in the congregation.

Her funeral liturgy was celebrated in the motherhouse chapel on March 11 with burial in Holy Sepulchre Cemetery. Memorials in her memory may be to the Sisters of Mercy, 1437 Blossom Road, Rochester, NY 14610.
