Monroe County school registration pushed back to Feb. 13 while meetings continue

The start of 2008-09 registration for Monroe County Catholic schools has been pushed back to Feb. 13, diocesan officials announced Feb. 5. The previously announced start date of Feb. 7 was published in the Catholic Courier‘s Feb. 6 monthly print edition, which went to press Feb 1.

Registration for previously enrolled families will run Feb. 13 to March 19, while registration from families new to the Catholic schools system will be accepted beginning March 25. According to state law, busing requests must be made by April 1, school officials said.

Diocesan officials said the change was made to ease uncertainty and answer questions regarding several new proposals to reopen Catholic schools slated for closure.

“As a courtesy to parents, Monroe County Catholic schools officials feel it is important that any questions over the fate of the schools be answered before the registration process begins,” the diocese said in its Feb. 5 statement.

Diocesan officials acknowledged that parents have presented several new proposals to keep individual schools open as part of meetings between Monroe County Catholic schools officials and parents and parish and school leaders. The diocese expects to receive more proposals as meetings continue at other schools this week.

According to the release, once all the meetings have been completed, Bishop Matthew H. Clark and school officials will review the proposals and then respond to parents and the public.
