Monthly Spanish Mass offered at Schuyler County church

A monthly Spanish Mass is now being offered in the Southern Tier.

Masses take place on the second Sunday of each month at 7:30 p.m. at St. Benedict Church, 304 Speedway Road, Odessa. Food and fellowship is offered in the basement hall of the Schuyler County church following each liturgy. The next Mass will take place March 10 with Father Brendan Buckley, OFM Cap., presiding.

According to a Jan. 14, 2024, article in the Schuyler Catholic Community bulletin, the Spanish Masses have been instituted due to “a growing population of Spanish speaking people, most especially among the farm-working community. We are called to care for their spiritual needs as we are for all others in our community.” The article noted that during the fall of 2023, Spanish Masses were celebrated at local farms by Father Jesús Flores, diocesan coordinator of migrant ministries; and Father Buckley. The monthly Mass at St. Benedict was established beginning in January.

All are welcome to the Spanish Masses. Area Catholics are asked to spread news of the liturgies to any Spanish-speaking people they know.
