New Catholic Charities directors named

New directors for Tompkins, Tioga and Schuyler counties mark the latest of several recent transitions for Catholic Charities agencies in the Southern Tier.

Renee M. Spear has been selected as the new executive director of Catholic Charities of Tompkins/Tioga (CCTT) effective Oct. 22. She is currently a residential manager for Catholic Charities of Broome County and has many years’ experience in human services, including nearly 15 years of residential and clinical services at the J.M. Murray Center in Cortland. A resident of Candor, Spear earned her bachelor’s and master’s degrees from SUNY Cortland.

At CCTT Spear will replace Diane DeMuth, who resigned as executive director this past summer after less than eight months in that position. Mary Pat Dolan has served as interim executive director since July 5. Dolan also was the agency’s interim leader following the departures of George Ferrari in 2005 and Christine Sanchirico in 2011.

Spear will oversee all staff and volunteers at CCTT’s main office at 324 W. Buffalo St., Ithaca, and Tioga Outreach Center at 139 Roki Road, Nichols. Tioga Outreach moved to its current location — in the former Nichols Elementary School — in the spring of 2012. The outreach had previously been located since 2007 at 464 Broad St. in Waverly.

In Schuyler County, Debra MacDonald has been hired as director of Catholic Charities of Schuyler effective Oct. 23. She is replacing Paul Marx, who is retiring after having served as director since 2009. MacDonald has been executive director of Schuyler County Child Care Coordinating Council since 2006. A Breesport resident, she has an associate’s degree from Corning Community College and a bachelor’s degree from Empire State College.

The hirings of Spear and MacDonald leave one open Catholic Charities directorship in the Tier. The position at Catholic Charities of Chemung/Schuyler remains unfilled following the resignation this past spring of Bridget Steed, who had served as executive director for nine years. Anthony Barbaro, associate diocesan director for Catholic Charities, is serving as interim executive director while Charles Nocera is his associate executive director.
