Now is time for action

To the editor:

It is quite disappointing to read some of the diatribes that have appeared recently in the letters section on the subject of climate change. Of course, there are folks out there seething in front of their TV sets and the talk radio programs, waiting for an opportunity to trash Al Gore, Jimmy Carter, the Nobel Committee and the Other Usual Liberal Suspects. All this in the face of melting glaciers, thawing permafrost, disappearing polar bears and a very compelling, international consensus of real climate scientists, not local weather forecasters.

And the saddest part, to hear one writer put it, is the attitude that “none of us will live long enough to know how all this shakes out.” What a legacy for our children and grandchildren! We all know there is much to discuss about what to do, but how do such sentiments help us move forward? Pope Benedict, the Church and countless other world leaders have taken up the cause of climate change because, simply, it is one of the defining challenges of this century, and it is time to get on with meeting it — for the sake of future generations.
