On godmothers …

Dec. 4 marks the one-year anniversary of the death of my Aunt Ginny, who died too young of ovarian cancer. She was an amazing woman, wife, mother, grandmother, sister and friend, and for me she also was a godmother. Knowing both the gaping hole left by her death and the outpouring of love and grace from family, friends and the community in memory of her life has inspired me in my own role of godmother. A godparent is supposed to be a representative of the Christian community, the church, for the godchild. In my godmother’s life and death I have seen the bonds of faith that bind us as a people and the love that gives courage in the face of great pain. It is a gift from her I will not forget, and one that I will do my best to emulate for my five godchildren. Thank you, Aunt Ginny.
