La Casa, a transitional house for migrant farm workers in the diocese, will hold an open house and barbecue from 4 to 7 p.m. Aug. 4 at the house, 16 Maple Ave., Sodus.
The open house and barbecue are being held as a way to thank volunteers for all the time and effort they’ve invested in the house, said Sister Janet Korn, SSJ, social-justice awareness coordinator for diocesan Catholic Charities.
La Casa is an initiative of diocesan Catholic Charities’ Project Unity and Catholic Charities of Wayne County. It is intended to provide transitional housing for farm workers as well as a place for bridge-building and communication between the migrant and Anglo communities, according to Sister Korn.
The residence was purchased in December 2004, and volunteers from more than 50 parishes and groups throughout the diocese then spent the next several months renovating the building. Bishop Matthew H. Clark blessed the house Oct. 23, 2005, during a special ceremony.
Those interested in attending the open house and barbecue are asked to RSVP by calling Peter at 315/483-9034.
