Parishes prepare for canonizations

As some parishioners head to Rome for Sunday’s canonization of Blessed Kateri Tekakwitha and Blessed Marianne Cope, others are making plans to celebrate the new saints with parties locally, including events at two diocesan parishes recently named for the saints-to-be.

Blessed Marianne Cope Parish, which comprises Guardian Angels and Good Shepherd Churches in Henrietta and St. Joseph Church in Rush, will celebrate the canonization with a luau following the 11:15 a.m. Mass on Oct. 21. The event will include a pig roast, flower leis and steel drum music. Tickets are required for the event. Call 585-334-3518 or 585-334-1412 for details.

Mother Marianne Cope served those with Hansen’s disease (leprosy) who were quarantined on the island of Molokai in Hawaii. Once she is canonized, the Henrietta parish will be known as St. Marianne Cope Parish.

Blessed Kateri Tekakwitha Parish, which was formed from five Catholic churches and St. Anne’s Community in Irondequoit, will be celebrating the canonization with a pancake breakfast and viewing of the canonization at 6 a.m. Oct. 21 at St. Cecilia Church. Call 585-266-1288, 585-342-2100 or 585-467-4286 for details.

Sister Janet Korn will speak about Blessed Kateri’s life at 6:30 p.m. Nov. 5 at Christ the King Parish. DVDs of a portrayal of Blessed Kateri’s life by Theresa Steele also are on sale for $5.

There also are some spots available on the three buses that Irondequoit parishioners are taking on a pilgrimage to the Shrine of Our Lady of Martyrs, St. Kateri’s birthplace, and the National Shrine of Bl. Kateri Tekakwitha in eastern New York for the canonization. Call Sister Bernarde at 585-288-2710, ext. 282.
