To the editor:
This is regarding the letter to the editor “Appreciates Mass choice”.
I daily rejoice that our Mass is a community celebration, no longer a solitary function between each Catholic and his or her God. I was a choir member under the old Latin Mass and thus was aware of what was going on, but from the choir loft vantage point, I continuously witnessed “attendees” of the Mass who had no clue what was occurring at the altar. My mother was among those who “attended” Mass and took that opportunity to say her novenas and prayers to her special saints, looking at the altar only when the bell rang to announce the consecration, then piously striking her breast to recognize that moment.
I suppose there are still those who are unaware of the wonder of the Mass, that our Lord daily offers Himself, body and blood, first to His Father, then to us. But I do believe more Catholics understand and participate in — not simply attend — the Mass than did under the Latin form.
