Peace Week events scheduled at several locations around Ithaca

A number of activities will be offered during Ithaca Peace Week, an initiative of Catholic Charities of Tompkins/Tioga and the Catholic parishes of Tompkins County.

All events are free and open to the public. They are as follows:

• Sept. 10, noon to 1:15 p.m.: “The Future of International Order: Rupture, Resistance and Prospects for Peace.” Panel discussion at Cornell University, Clark Hall Room 700, 142 Sciences Drive.

• Sept. 14, 6 p.m.: Showing of “Bombshell,” a PBS “American Experience” documentary exploring how the U.S. government manipulated the narrative and downplayed the human toll of the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Audience discussion to follow. St. Catherine of Siena Church, 309 Siena Drive, Ithaca.

• Sept. 15, 7 p.m.: “Toward an Ethic of Comprehensive Nonviolence.” Presentation by David Cortright, professor emeritus, University of Notre Dame’s Keough School of Global Affairs/Kroc Institute for International Peace Studies. Immaculate Conception Church, 113 N. Geneva St., Ithaca.

• Sept. 16, 6 p.m.: Showing of “Bombshell.” Cornell University’s Willard Straight Hall Auditorium, 136 Ho Plaza.

• Sept. 17, 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.: “Rethinking Nuclear Weapons and Global Security … Something Going Wrong with the Bomb.” This full-day symposium will explore contemporary dangers of nuclear weapons, how we got here, and how we can work for a more secure and peaceful future. Cornell University Room G10, BioTechnology Building, 526 Campus Road.

• Sept. 19, 7:30 p.m.: Dorothy Cotton Jubilee Singers. This local group is dedicated to the preservation of Negro spirituals and the legacy of Dorothy Cotton. St. Catherine of Siena Church, 309 Siena Drive, Ithaca.

• Sept. 20, 9:30 a.m.: International Peace Pole gathering and interfaith peace meditation. Foundation of Light, 391 Turkey Hill Road, Ithaca.

• Sept. 21, 7 p.m.: Taizé Prayer Service for Peace. This falls on the United Nations International Day of Peace and will include chants, silence, readings and prayers. St. Catherine of Siena Church, 309 Siena Drive, Ithaca.

• Sept. 22-27, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily: Tibetan Buddhist monks will create a mandala out of different colored sand dedicated to Chenrezig, enlightened embodiment of compassion. Every day at 3 p.m., the monks will pause their work for chanting and meditation. Ithaca College Business School Upper Atrium, 953 Danby Road.

• Oct. 4: Blessing of the Animals at area Catholic parishes on the feast day of St. Francis of Assisi. This date is the 800th anniversary of his death and will occur during a jubilee year devoted to the popular saint.
