The Catholic Daughters of the Americas recently announced that a local student’s essay earned top honors in the essay portion of the organization’s 2019 National Education Contest.
Last year, Kherington McLoud, then a fourth-grader at St. Michael School in Penn Yan, penned an essay as part of a classroom writing assignment. Her essay won the contest sponsored by Penn Yan-based Court St. Michael 1173 of the Catholic Daughters of the Americas as well as the New York state contest. In early September, she learned that her essay also placed first in her division at the national level.
Inspired by Psalm 40, the theme for this year’s essay contest was “Here I am Lord. I come to do your will.” Kherington wrote about the ways she tries to be Christ-like at school, home, in her community and in her church.
