Students and faculty at St. Michael School in Penn Yan marked Veterans’ Day in November with a prayer service at the school’s flagpole.
During the service to honor living and deceased veterans, participants prayed and sang patriotic songs, which had been selected by the school’s fifth-grade class. Father Mark Brewer, parochial vicar at St. Mary Parish in Canandaigua, led the opening and closing prayer, and a number of uniformed veterans — including several who had served in World War II — attended the service.
During the service each veteran told the children where, when and how he or she had served the nation. After the service, many of the children lingered with the veterans and asked questions about their service. The prayer service helped students to be mindful of the sacrifice that veterans have made in the past and continue to make, said principal James Tette.
