Oct. 4 marks the feast day of St. Francis of Assisi, a saint often known as the patron saint of animals. Several parishes in the Finger Lakes region plan to celebrate this feast day by holding pet blessings. Parishioners are invited to bring their pets to the blessings to be sprinkled with holy water. Many blessings also include music and St. Francis-related readings.
A pet blessing is scheduled to take place Oct. 2 at 10 a.m. at Auburn’s St. Hyacinth Parish, 63 Pulaski St. The parish’s pastor, Father Berard Dudek, OFM Conv., will bless parishioners’ animals before going to the local Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, where he has been invited to bless the animals there.
