The first-annual Ridin’ for Refuge Poker Run for the Homeless is set for Sunday, Aug. 8, rain or shine.
Proceeds will benefit new homeless housing development and Providence Housing Development Corp.’s Shelter Plus Care Program, which provides rent subsidies and case-management services to homeless people recovering from drug or alcohol dependency.
In 2009, 91 percent of the program’s clients increased educational and employment skills within 12 months of entering permanent housing. All parent participants who wanted to be reunited with their families did so within 24 months of participation.
Providence Housing Development Corp. is an affiliate of diocesan Catholic Charities.
Registration for the poker run is from 10:30 a.m. to noon in the parking lot at Long Pond Road, Greece, and the Lake Ontario State Parkway. Signs will be posted.
Registration is $20 per motorcycle and $5 per passenger. Participants also may use a car or truck to take part in the ride for the same fee.
The 70-mile event will start at the registration site and will make four other stops in Orleans and Monroe counties before concluding at an after-party from 1 to 5 p.m. at the Merchants Grill, 881 Merchants Road, Rochester, featuring food and music by the Coupe de Villes. Tickets for the after-party are $10 and will be sold at the door starting at 1 p.m.
