Poverty is worse in communist nations, letter-writer asserts

To the editor:

“I know our Americans are hurting,” said President Biden, as Ukraine was being attacked by Russia. The majority in this country, even the poor, have NO idea of what hurting is. My husband and I have traveled to over 50 countries throughout the world … (including) Cuba, Russia and Vietnam, all countries controlled by communism. … We saw (rural populations) living like those in undeveloped countries. In cities, we saw many beggars in Russia along with starkness of the buildings and (streets) unpaved or in extremely poor shape. There is a great dichotomy between the new bourgeois and poor classes, with many citizens in the poor class. Seeing is believing!

(W)e can’t compare with countries controlled by communism. We also have been blessed/lucky to have … no attack on our land since Pearl Harbor. Sometimes we wonder why so many people want to immigrate to America, yet we don’t see lines or boatloads ready to leave it either. (T)wo-thirds of the world’s population live in poverty. One can see it on TV or the internet but visiting and living in those countries is an eye-opening experience.

I am worried (about Ukraine) but prayer and hope help more. Let’s be more grateful of what we have in the United States and begin working together for the good of our country and our people!! Hatred brings division. We can disagree, but let’s be kind and thoughtful to ALL those who think differently than us. Kindness changes hearts.
