GATES — A Gates Town Court justice is considering a motion to drop charges against a priest accused of sexual abuse and endangering the welfare of a child.
During July 12 proceedings, attorney John F. Speranza made a motion to dismiss the charges against his client, Father John J. Steger, who has pleaded not guilty to two misdemeanor counts of second-degree sexual abuse and two misdemeanor counts of endangering the welfare of a child.
Judge Peter Pupatelli said he would reserve ruling on the motion until Aug. 23.
On May 17, Father Steger, pastor of St. Jude the Apostle Church, 4100 Lyell Road, was placed on administrative leave by the Diocese of Rochester. He is not allowed to engage in public ministry during the leave, the diocese said. Father Michael Schramel since has assumed administrative duties at St. Jude.
