Program combines exercise, learning

Fidelis Care, the health-insurance plan provider founded by New York state’s Catholic bishops, has awarded the diocesan Department of Catholic Schools a $60,000 grant to develop and implement the Math & Movement learning program. This initiative will be offered to students in kindergarten through eighth grade at Catholic schools throughout the diocese.

Schools stress healthy habits

Math & Movement was developed by Suzy Koontz, an Ithaca resident. It is meant to be an enjoyable approach to learning math by utilizing floor mats and integrating movement with learning. According to the Math & Movement website, “Using movement can help kids learn, retain, and gain valuable skills while exercising their body and mind at the same time.”

Anthony Cook III, diocesan superintendent of schools, noted that incorporation of movement in the classroom has proven successful in the learning process. He expressed his gratefulness for the Fidelis Care grant, adding that Math & Movement is “another key thing we’ll be putting in place” to encourage exercise among Catholic-school students.
