Providence breaks ground on new senior housing

Providence Housing Development Corp., an affiliate of diocesan Catholic Charities, broke ground Dec. 15 on Atwood Park Apartments, a new affordable-housing project with 33 one-bedroom apartments for very-low-income seniors ages 62 and older.

The project received $3.8 million in funding from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Developments Section 202 Supportive Housing for the Elderly Program, a HUD Developmental Planning Grant of $262,743 and $400,000 from the Monroe County Home Investment Partnerships Program.

The apartment complex is for seniors whose income is less than half of the area median income, which is $23,300 for one person. Rents will be based on 30 percent of each applicant’s income and will include heat and hot water.

Call Providence at 585-328-3228, ext. 1417, to be placed on the interest list for a unit. Applications will be available in late spring 2010; the opening is set for fall 2010.

In addition to Atwood Park Apartments, Providence is constructing Union Meadows II in North Chili, which is expected to be occupied by the spring of 2010.
