Public welcome at deacon, priest ordinations

The public is invited to attend the permanent-deacon and priestly ordinations scheduled on the first two Saturdays of June. Both ordination Masses will take place at Sacred Heart Cathedral, 296 Flower City Park, Rochester.

On June 4, four men will be ordained to the permanent diaconate. They are Eric Bessette of Pittsford’s Church of the Transfiguration; Donald Eggleston of Greece’s St. Charles Borromeo Parish; John Hoffman of St. Paul of the Cross Parish in Honeoye Falls; and Bob Lyons of Our Lady of Lourdes Parish in Brighton. The ordination will begin at 10:30 a.m., with Bishop Matthew H. Clark officiating.

On June 11, Deacon Scott Caton will be ordained by Bishop Clark as a diocesan priest. That ordination also will begin at 10:30 a.m. Deacon Caton is a full-time professor of American history and church history at Roberts Wesleyan College. A former Protestant minister who converted to Catholicism in 1998, Deacon Caton belongs to Our Lady of Victory/St. Joseph Parish in Rochester and has served his diaconal year at Rochester’s Blessed Sacrament Parish. He is a married father of six children who obtained a special waiver from the Vatican regarding the celibacy requirement for Roman Catholic priests.
