Father Stan Fortuna of the Franciscan Friars of the Renewal, who has been dubbed the “rapping priest,” will speak at St. Lawrence Parish in Greece June 8-9.
Father Fortuna, who performs contemporary Christian music, jazz, folk, reggae and rap, will celebrate Mass and give a talk from 7 to 10 p.m. Friday, June 8, and from 9:30 to 11 a.m. Saturday, June 9.
The priest is one of eight original members of the Community of Franciscan Friars of the Renewal, which was established in the Archdiocese of New York in 1987. In that year, he also established the nonprofit Francesco Productions to produce his music, teaching tapes and videos. Proceeds support the community’s work with the poor.
Father Fortuna was asked in 1999 to preach and perform at a youth rally in St. Louis during Pope John Paul II’s visit; he has been a featured speaker at Franciscan University’s High School Age Youth Conferences and Youth 2000 events; and he has appeared many times on EWTN’s “Life on the Rock.” In September of 2006, he released his latest CD, “Sacro Song 3: The Completion of the Trilogy,” which features a tribute to Pope John Paul II and his thoughts on the lack of father figures.
Father Fortuna’s talks are free and open to the public. A head count of groups is appreciated and may be made by calling Agnes Falbo at 585/227-1035.
