Reaching out with technology

A translation of Pope Benedict’s message for World Communications Day was released recently and made a splash in the news.

In the message, the pope called on priests to use digital media to spread the Word, and to see the Internet as the new “agorà” (open ground or meeting space) in which ministry and outreach can flourish. The pope cautioned, however, that “priests present in the world of digital communications should be less notable for their media savvy than for their priestly heart, their closeness to Christ.” With all of the new gadgets available (yes, I’m talking about you, iPad) and new ones on the way every day it’s easy to get caught up in the technology and forget that it is only a tool for the message. And yet what a tool it can be! I hope that the leaders of our parishes take the pope’s message to heart and try something new this year. We have been given great opportunities with digital media to stretch ourselves in new ways and to reach people who may have never set foot in one of our parishes. I also hope that everyone in the pews is challenged by the pope’s message to use technology in a way that is both consistent with our discipleship and puts these tools to their fullest use.
