Recall nation’s basic principles

To the editor:

Many thanks to Ronald J. Buttarazzi Sr. for his timely reminder (Catholic Courier, March 2009) that our country is — not was — founded on the constitutional principles of federalism and the separation of powers among the legislative, executive, and judicial branches. He also brought to our attention the Supreme Court case of 1857 in which a runaway slave was deemed to be the personal property of his “master.” Our current situation in the United States does reflect failure of our historical polity and our increasingly unjust treatment of those considered inferior or less than human.

The fact that approximately one-third of the rising generation has been eradicated through procured abortion is an extreme tragedy and an incalculable loss to that generation, to our nation and ultimately to the world.

A Catholic journalist, Patrick Riley, has written: “‚Ķnothing is more important to the future of the world than that public opinion turn decisively against abortion.”
