* Ten-year-old Collin Cup, who will be a sixth-grader at Irondequoit’s Christ the King School in the fall, took the bronze medal in the U.S. Junior Olympic Skills Competition in California at the end of July. The event is the U.S. Olympic Committee’s official youth skills competition for basketball, soccer, tennis, and track and field.

* Ten members of the cluster of St. Michael Parish in Newark, St. John the Evangelist Parish in Clyde and St. Patrick Parish in Savannah recently raised $1,848 for cancer research. Father Joseph Marcoux, sacramental minister, and parishioners Kip DeLisio, Dick DeVito, Paul Ferindino, Glenn Lauster, Dan Dapolito, Bruce Liseno, Paul Winter, Bruce Waterman and Willy Lundy volunteered to be "locked up" and only released after they solicited donations via cell-phone calls. They exceeded their original goal of $1,000.

* Eight social ministers were recognized at Catholic Charities’ annual Parish Social Ministry Dinner on June 8 at the Hill Top Inn in Elmira. Honorees were Linda and Dan Finlay, St. Catherine of Siena Parish, Ithaca; Barbara Limoncelli, St. Mary Our Mother, Horseheads; Joanne Yeager, Christ the Redeemer Parish/St. Casimir, Elmira; Sister Raymond Joseph, RSM, St. Mary, Elmira; Barbara Angelo, Christ the Redeemer Parish/St. Charles Borromeo, Elmira Heights; and Faith and Mike Tarby, Blessed Sacrament, Elmira.

* Elaine Dahl, a parishioner of Schuyler Catholic Community, has been presented with Schuyler County Office for the Aging’s 2009 Senior Citizen Award for outstanding volunteerism.
