Recognizing in November

Father Ralph Fraats, a priest of the Diocese of Rochester, was knighted Sept. 26 by Cardinal Edward Egan at St. Patrick Cathedral, New York City, for the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre. With the recommendation of Bishop Matthew H. Clark and the approval of Rome, he was one of 16 selected for this honor from the eastern United States, Canada and Italy.</P

In a dedication ceremony held Sept. 24, St. Joseph’s Skilled Nursing Rehabilitation Services officially became designated the St. Joseph’s Marie Michael Center. Named after longtime employee and volunteer Sister Marie Michael Miller, SSJ, the center will provide services for patients requiring longer periods of rehabilitation.

Sister Miller was hired by St. Joseph’s Hospital in 1950 as a head nurse. She served as director of the School of Nursing and director of nursing service before becoming an assistant administrator in 1975. She received her nursing-home administrator’s license in 1978 and was administrator for St. Joseph’s 71-bed Skilled Nursing Facility until her retirement in April 2007. She currently volunteers for the hospital’s pastoral-care department.

The Marie Michael Center is located on the fifth floor of St. Joseph’s. It is the only Elmira-area program to offer physical rehabilitation at both the acute and skilled-nursing level.
