Recognizing

* Mary Carol Wall, youth minister and faith-formation coordinator at Bath’s St. Mary Parish, was honored by the National Federation for Catholic Youth Ministry during the NFCYM convention Dec. 4-7, 2008, in Cleveland. As a result of this recognition, Wall received $500 in musical merchandise, which she donated to the parish. In addition, St. Mary will be graced by a future appearance from nationally renowned musician Jesse Manibusan.

"A person who for many years has been an inspiration to our parish and its youth has now received national recognition for her inspiration to youth ministers," Deacon Raymond Defendorf, St. Mary’s pastoral administrator, wrote in the Dec. 14, 2008, parish bulletin.

* Sister Phyllis McGuire, RSM, has been named Woman of the Year by the Tioga Lions Club. She was honored at a special event held Jan. 17 at the Countryside Community Center in Owego. Sister McGuire has served since 2002 as executive director of Tioga County Rural Ministry, and has been with TCRM since 1996 overall. The Owego-based ministry annually provides food, financial assistance and other services to thousands of people in need throughout the Tioga area.

* Students at Corning’s All Saints Academy participated in traditional autumn festivities on Oct. 31, 2008. Among the highlights were the annual All Saints Day Mass at St. Mary Church, featuring students dressed as their favorite saints; a Halloween-costume parade behind the church; and collection of Halloween candy to be sent to military personnel overseas. Earlier in October, as part of National Fire Prevention Week, members of the Corning Fire Department spoke to the All Saints students on such topics as "stop, drop, and roll"; the importance of smoke detectors; safety in the kitchen; electrical-cord checkups; space-heater safety; match and lighter safety; candle caution; and fire-escape plans at home and at school.
