To the editor:
The article by Amy Kotlarz on Parish access to the disabled omitted, in my view, a most important issue — lack of a unisex handicapped restroom separate from the women’s/men’s restrooms. Persons — especially those in a wheelchair — who need assistance cannot go into the public restrooms unless they can close the entire facility off, and that’s only if the public restroom is handicapped accessible!
That for us is the main factor in not attending at Church. It takes a significant amount of time to transport a handicapped person, and if a restroom is not available at the destination, that is a major impediment. I know it would be very costly; but, possibly federal grants might help defray the cost to build such facilities. Without such facilities, we will continue to watch the Sunday Mass on TV. We have no choice!
