ROC the Day donations will benefit annual Christmas Appeal

The Catholic Courier and Catholic Charities of the Diocese of Rochester are inviting the public to ROC with them Nov. 28 during a 24-hour online fundraising event.

The Courier and Catholic Charities are again participating in ROC the Day, a one-day, online giving opportunity offered through the United Way of Greater Rochester and the Finger Lakes. According to the ROC the Day website, the annual event benefits not-for-profit organizations throughout the nine-county Greater Rochester area.

It will take place from midnight to 11:59 p.m. Nov. 28, which also is known as Giving Tuesday.

The Courier and Catholic Charities are seeking donations to their joint Christmas Appeal campaign, now in its 54th year. The Christmas Appeal raises money for the emergency funds of Catholic Charities offices and affiliated agencies throughout the Rochester Diocese. This year’s campaign has a goal of $46,500.

Donations to the appeal enable Catholic Charities to continue providing small, emergency grants to people — regardless of faith, race, ethnic and economic background — who are in financial crisis. Appeal proceeds have been used to fund Hunger Relief Grants and to cover utility bills, security deposits, rent or mortgage payments, urgent home repairs, gas, prescriptions and other expenses for individuals and families who are either awaiting or ineligible for other types of assistance.

Last year, ROC the Day generated $1,962 for the 2022-23 Christmas Appeal, nearly doubling the previous year’s ROC the Day tally.

The appeal runs through the end of February 2024.
