Catholic Family Center in Rochester and partner agencies throughout New York state are gearing up for a June 20 virtual event intended to raise awareness of refugees in local communities and money for the agencies that assist them.

A Walk In Their Words is a virtual run and walk, meaning that participants do not gather to walk or run on a designated course. Rather, participants walk or run either on a treadmill in their own homes or on a course of their own choosing in their neighborhoods or local parks. Participants in this virtual event are encouraged to complete their courses on or around June 20, which is World Refugee Day.

A Walk In Their Words also will honor refugees’ courage by giving participants the opportunity to listen to audio recordings of refugees and immigrants sharing their experiences and the stories of their journeys to New York from other parts of the world. Proceeds from the event will support agencies that resettle refugees and serve immigrants and have recently experienced funding cuts. Besides Catholic Family Center, these organizations include:

The Center, also known as Mohawk Valley Resource Center for Refugees, Utica

Catholic Charities of Buffalo

International Institute of Buffalo

Jewish Family Service of Buffalo and Erie County

Journey’s End Refugee Services, Buffalo

U.S. Committee for Refugees and Immigrants’ Albany field office

Those interested in registering for the virtual event may do so online at www.awalkintheirwords.org. Participants are asked to contribute a minimum donation of $30 and will receive a virtual gift bag after registering for the event.
