By collecting beverage tabs for recycling, St. Joseph’s Hospital in Elmira helps contribute to the Ronald McDonald House of Rochester.
The effort, begun five years ago among several Elmira-area community organizations, has raised more than $1,000 for Ronald McDonald House with most of the funds coming from St. Joseph’s.
The hospital’s pastoral-care department spearheads this initiative, in which employees deposit container tabs in bins located in the hospital’s front lobby.
David and Denise Holleran, parishioners of St. Mary’s Southside in Elmira, are the volunteers who transport the bins from St. Joseph’s. They have a personal tie to the cause, having once stayed at a Ronald McDonald House in Minnesota when one of their children needed medical treatment.
Ronald McDonald House, begun in 1974, provides temporary living space for families whose children are in nearby hospitals.
