Says drugs are the key to gun violence

To the editor:

All this hysteria over gun control due to the tragedies at Newtown and Webster is just that – hysteria. It makes no sense.

New York state has the strictest gun control laws in the country. But passing new laws in the middle of the night will only punish law-abiding gun owners.

It will not do, and has not done, anything to stop the killings.

If gun control were effective, there would not have been 30 subsequent school shootings since Columbine which banned assault weapons used by the Newtown and Webster killers.

AK-47s are the weapons of choice for drug dealers. So it’s not the guns, it’s the drugs that are the root cause for the demonic killings.

In Mexico 20,000 people a year are killed in drug-related violence. And, by the way, these AK-47s the drug cartels like so much? Our very own government is happy to supply them. So let’s disarm them – they don’t need a permit.

Get rid of the drugs and drug cartels, and you will find the problem of gun violence will go away.

EDITOR’S NOTE: The federal assault-weapons ban was passed in 1994, before the shootings at Columbine. However, the ban expired 10 years later, well before the Newtown and Webster killings. More facts about 1994 ban can be found here:
