Says fault lies in bureaucratic bloat

To the editor:

I beg to differ with Father Catoir’s assessment on what’s wrong with America. Blaming Social Security and Medicare recipients for the budget deficit is a government and media lie. Social Security and Medicare are supported through the FICA tax. Small adjustments in funding could make them self sufficient in perpetuity. Social Security was running a surplus until Clinton looted the trust fund to balance his budgets. The facts are that the deficit is due to two costly wars, a bloated defense budget, TARP, Stimulus 1 and 2, transferring our manufacturing base to China and Obamacare. The solution, end the wars, end corporate welfare, bring manufacturing back to the U.S., repeal Obamacare and stop trying to police the world.

Social Security and Medicare are not entitlements. People pay into the system their entire working lives with the expectation of a guaranteed income and a modicum of health care in their old age. Retirees did not cause the deficit. The fault lies with an out of control bureaucracy and the special interests that feed at the government trough.
