Says pope is wise, humble

To the editor:

Pope Francis’ trip to Rio to visit the poor in the slums is a true imitation of his namesake, St. Francis.

The pope cared nothing for the rich and famous, only the poor and down-and-out.

He also caused quite a stir by saying, "Who am I to judge (gay priests)?" This is not to be interpreted as an endorsement of the homosexual lifestyle or gay marriage.

We, as Catholics, have always been taught to "love the sinner, hate the sin." The Catholic Church never discriminated against gays or excommunicated them. They were always welcomed in church.

As for the gay priests, if they obey the vows of Holy Orders and remain celibate, then their sexual orientation is not an issue. It never was.

So Pope Francis is a very wise and humble pope, indeed.

God bless Pope Francis!
