Schools gear up for special salutes

Several local schools will be observing Veteran’s Day with special salutes.

All members of St. Lawrence Parish in Greece who are veterans, are on active duty or in the reserves and all those who wish to honor veterans are invited to St. Lawrence School’s Veterans Day Salute. The salute will take place Nov. 9 at 12:45 and 7 p.m. in the school gym, 1000 N. Greece Road. To RSVP, call 585/225-3870 or visit www.stlawrenceschool.org.

St. John of Rochester School will host a Veteran’s Day prayer Service at 9:15 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 9, in the school gymnasium at 10 Wickford Way, Fairport.

The event is for students at the school and invited families, veterans and members of the military. Members of the Marine Corps League will present third-graders with certificates of appreciation for their patriotism. The 7-year-old Third Grade Veterans Project, started by teacher Elizabeth “Betsy” Place, recognizes the contributions of veterans to the nation.

Third-graders selected members of the military and highlighted their specific rank, branch of service, when and where they served, and their job in the military. The finished projects will be on display following a prayer service. Third-graders also will oversee a Toys for Tots collection through Nov. 9, accepting new, unwrapped toys to contribute to the Marine Corps toy-collection program.
