Second-graders raise money for classmate fighting cancer

Jenesis Shaw

Sister Melissa Gernon and her second-grade students at Nazareth Elementary School in Rochester set up a lemonade stand during lunches Nov. 3 to raise money for their classmate, Jenesis Shaw, who is battling kidney cancer. The second-graders focused on turning “lemons into lemonade,” with all proceeds from their lemonade stand going toward Team Jenny Bean’s, an organization created by Jenesis’s family to raise awareness about childhood cancers and promote efforts to support children and families facing life-changing diagnoses. Jenesis plans to use the money raised from the lemonade sale to make “cancer care bags” for other children to take with them to the hospital.
