‘Second Time Around’ musical revue returns

"Second Time Around," a musical review featuring alumni of the former Upstairs Youth Agency, will present a musical that will benefit St. John Neumann and Holy Cross schools and GEVA Theatre’s educational programs.

The shows will be at Geva Theatre Center’s Nextstage, 75 Woodbury Blvd., Rochester, on Jan. 27 and 28 and Feb. 2, 3 and 4. Tickets are $20, and details are at 585-232-GEVA or www.gevatheater.org.

The Upstairs Youth Agency began in the late 1970s when youths who attended St. Augustine and St. Monica parishes came together to do a musical revue. The show was such a hit that the team produced about a dozen more musicals written between 1977 and 1983, with four of the shows written by composer Tony Falzano. The productions were jointly funded and sponsored by the City-County Youth Bureau, the Diocese of Rochester and the Daisy Marquis Jones Foundation.

Last year, cast members reunited 35 years later to present "Second Time Around," a revue show of the original musicals. Last year’s performances sold out, so this year the cast members and youths from St. John Neumann and Holy Cross schools are presenting six additional performances: 7:30 p.m. Friday, Jan. 27; 2 and 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 28; 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 2; 7:30 p.m. Friday Feb. 3; and 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 4.

The performances are sponsored by the Sisters of St. Joseph.
