Secular Franciscans profess their vows

Four local Catholics recently made a lifelong commitment to live out Gospel in their daily lives.

John Ocon, Adrienne Kirby, Sue Reid and Kathy Smith became professed members of the Secular Order of Franciscans during a 7 p.m. Mass May 9 at St. Leo Church in Hilton.

The Secular Franciscan Order was established by St. Francis of Assisi more than 800 years ago. Secular Franciscans do not take religious vows or live in convents or friaries, and they can be single or married laypeople as well as diocesan priests and deacons. They commit to using the Gospel to discern how to act in their daily lives and focus on spreading God’s love through peacemaking and serving the marginalized.

There are four communities — known as fraternities — of Secular Franciscans within the Diocese of Rochester. Ocon belongs to the Glory of the Most High Fraternity in Rochester, and Kirby, Reid and Smith belong to the Immaculate Heart of Mary Fraternity in Hilton. The Our Lady of Angels Fraternity has members in Auburn and Geneva, while the St. Pius X Fraternity meets in Corning.
