Sentence in children’s story not age-appropriate

To the editor:

As a longtime educator, I was deeply concerned with the article “Jesus is accused of breaking the Sabbath” in the Kids’ Chronicle section of the March issue.

I find that the statement “The Jews hated Jesus even more for his reply and wanted to kill him” is not age appropriate for young readers. This is a comment that can quite easily lead to anti-Judaism and anti-Semitism thinking.

I strongly urge parents and teachers to read Nostra Aetate (1965) and Dr. Joseph Kelly’s Behold How Good It Is: Jews and Catholics in Rochester (2015) prior to teaching this lesson.
