Sister Agnita Monat, SSJ, at 85

Sister Agnita Monat of the Sisters of St. Joseph died at the congregation's motherhouse on Dec. 3, 2004. She was 85.

Having entered the congregation from her home parish of St. Mary's in Buffalo, she attended Nazareth College where she earned bachelor's degrees in education and history, and a master's degree in education.

Her teaching career took her to St. Ambrose, St. Augustine, Christ the King and St. Stanislaus schools, all in Rochester; St. Alphonsus, Auburn; St. Anthony, Elmira; St. Stephen, Geneva; and St. Patrick in Seneca Falls. She then taught children for whom English was a second language. She retired in 1998.

Sister Monat is survived by her sisters, Gertrude Meyer and Marguerite Burke; nephew Charles Meyer; nieces Marion Wenink, Margaret, Joan and Catherine Meyer; and her sisters in the congregation.

Her funeral liturgy was celebrated on Dec. 7, 2004, in the motherhouse chapel; burial was at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery.
