Sister of St. Joseph Ann dePorres Amesbury died Feb. 25, 2022. She was 93 years old.
Sister Amesbury entered the congregation in 1946 from her home parish of St. Theodore, Gates. She received a bachelor’s degree in 1954 and a master’s degree in English in 1960 from Nazareth College.
She began her teaching career in 1948 at St. Ann, Rochester. She also taught at Holy Trinity, Webster. In 1957, she was assigned to St. Agnes High School, Rochester, where she taught English for 18 years.
In 1975, Sister Amesbury began working in spirituality ministry. She provided spiritual direction and retreats at the Emmaus House of Prayer, Rochester, and later at the Sisters of St. Joseph Spirituality Center at the motherhouse. From 1997-2012, Sister Amesbury served at Church of the Assumption in Fairport, providing the Ignatian Spiritual Exercises and spiritual direction to parishioners.
She moved to the motherhouse in 2012 and continued with her spirituality ministry there until her failing health no longer allowed her to do so.
Sister Amesbury is survived by her sister-in-law Gert; nieces and nephews; cousins; friends; and sisters in the congregation. Her funeral liturgy was celebrated in the motherhouse chapel March 3, 2022, with burial at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery.
