Sister of St. Joseph Anne Helene Brien died on Aug. 24, 2014, at the age of 90.
She entered the congregation in 1941 from her home parish of Ss. Peter and Paul, Rochester. She completed Nazareth Normal School in 1944 and earned a B.E. in 1948 and an M.S. in Elementary Education in 1956, both from Nazareth College of Rochester.
Sister Brien began teaching at Corpus Christi in 1944, and taught at St. Francis Xavier, St. John the Evangelist, Greece, St. Theodore in Rochester; St. Michael, Penn Yan; Our Lady of Lourdes, St. Thomas More, and served as both principal and teacher at our Lady of Perpetual Help. She was assigned to Nazareth Academy and then to St. Agnes High as a math teacher.
After 30 years in education, Sister Brien began parish work in St. John, Clyde, and served as pastoral assistant in St. Gregory in Marion, St. Patrick in Seneca Falls, and Epiphany/St. Rose, Sodus. She worked from 1975 thru 1979 at the Diocesan Pastoral Office providing marriage counseling. Sister Anne Helene then worked for 7 years in Sisters Care and in 2001 returned to St. Patrick, Seneca Falls, to minister to the elderly of the parish. She retired to the motherhouse in 2010
She is survived by her sister-in-law, many nieces and nephews, and by her sisters in the congregation. Her funeral liturgy was celebrated in the motherhouse chapel on Aug. 27, 2014, with burial in Holy Sepulchre Cemetery.
