Sister Barbara Baker, MHSH; served as pastoral associate

Mission Helpers of the Sacred Heart Sister Barbara Baker, who served at parishes in Greece, Gates and Fairport, died Jan. 1, 2024. She was 80 years old.

A native of Rochester, Sister Baker entered the congregation in 1960. She earned a bachelor’s degree in psychology from Notre Dame University of Maryland and also had completed the course work for a master’s degree in religious studies at Manhattan College in New York.

Sister Baker served in Brockway, Pa., at the diocesan catechetical center, where she taught religion to children and led methods/doctrine courses for adults. Over the next 20 years, she became a leader in the field of religious education, serving in dioceses in Pennsylvania, New York and, Ohio; at Wright Patterson Air Force Base; and at various military posts in Germany. She served in congregational ministries that included both vocational and leadership programs.

In 1986, Sister Baker started ministering at Transfiguration Parish in Marietta, Ga., where she served for 12 years as pastoral associate.

She returned to Rochester in 1999, serving as pastoral associate at St. Charles Borromeo in Greece. In 2006, she became pastoral associate at St. Jude the Apostles in Gates. And in 2016, she became pastoral associate at Church of the Resurrection and Church of the Assumption in Fairport.

Her funeral liturgy was celebrated at Stella Maris Chapel in Timonium, Md.
