Sister Barbara Hughes, SSJ; teacher, hairdresser

Sister Barbara Hughes, formerly Sister Euphemia, of the Sisters of St. Joseph, died at the congregation’s motherhouse on June 17, 2004, at the age of 87.

Sister Hughes entered the congregation in 1933 from her home parish of St. Patrick in Mt. Morris and earned her bachelor’s degree from Rochester’s Nazareth College. She taught elementary grades at Sacred Heart, Holy Apostles, St. Francis Xavier and St. Ambrose schools in Rochester; Guardian Angels School in Henrietta; St. Mary schools in Auburn, Canandaigua and Dansville; St. Stephen School in Geneva; and Ss. Peter and Paul and St. Anthony schools in Elmira.

In 1970, she earned a license in cosmetology, opened and managed a salon at the motherhouse, and served the congregation as hairdresser for more than 25 years. She then retired in 1998 to the prayer ministry.

Sister Hughes is survived by her brother, Edward (Janeen); her sister, Mary Taravello; nieces, nephews and her sisters in the congregation. Her funeral liturgy was celebrated June 19, 2004, in the motherhouse chapel with burial in Holy Sepulchre Cemetery.
