Sister Bernadine Frieda, SSJ, 97

Sister of St. Joseph Bernadine Freida (formerly Sister Martoni) died May 26, 2015. She was 97 years old.

Sister Freida entered the congregation in 1936 from her home parish of Holy Redeemer in Rochester. She earned a bachelor’s degree in education in 1946 and a bachelor’s degree in English and general science in 1958, both from Nazareth College. In 1973, she earned a master’s degree in chemistry and general science from the former Newton College of Sacred Heart in Newton, Mass.

She taught at St. Joseph, Wayland; St. John the Evangelist, Spencerport; Mother of Sorrows, Greece; and St. Francis Xavier, St. Anne, St. Stanislaus and Corpus Christi, Rochester. In 1967, she taught high-school science and health at DeSales High School in Geneva.

While she was in Geneva, Sister Freida volunteered for the North Seneca Ambulance, studied CPR and received a certification as an EMT from Geneva General Hospital in 1976. In 1980, she left DeSales High School and became executive director of the Red Cross chapter in Dansville.

In 1989, she began working as a nurse aide at St. Joseph Convent Infirmary where she remained until her retirement in 2003.

Sister Bernadine is survived by sisters in the congregation. Her funeral liturgy was celebrated in the motherhouse chapel on May 29, 2015, with burial in Holy Sepulchre Cemetery.
