Sister Burgio marks 100 years

Sister Rosemary Burgio, a Sister of St. Joseph for more than 80 years, celebrated her 100th birthday on Nov. 29 with a special honor.

Nine days prior to her birthday, Sister Burgio received a visit from Monroe County Legislator Paul E. Haney, who was once a kindergarten student of hers at Rochester’s Holy Rosary School. He presented her with a special proclamation on behalf of the county, honoring her 100th birthday as well as her 80 years as a Sister of St. Joseph.

Sister Burgio grew up in St. Francis Xavier Parish in Rochester, and has taught in all parts of the Rochester Diocese. Her assignments have included St. Mary, Dansville; Nazareth Academy, Blessed Sacrament, Our Lady of Good Counsel, Holy Rosary, St. Ambrose and St. Mary’s Boy’s Home School, all in Rochester; Ss. Peter and Paul, Elmira; St. Joseph, Wayland; Our Lady of Lourdes, Brighton; St. Patrick, Seneca Falls; St. Mary Our Mother, Horseheads; and St. Anne, Palmyra. In her retirement at the Sisters of St. Joseph Motherhouse, Sister Burgio serves in the congregation’s prayer ministry.
