Sister Catherine Paul Theiss, a Sister of St. Joseph of Carondelet for 41 years, died March 29, 2007, at St. Joseph’s Provincial House in Latham, N.Y.
She was a native of Holy Family Parish in Auburn who graduated from St. John the Baptist Academy in Syracuse and attended Powelson Business Institute. In addition to her collegiate degrees, she received certification in religious education from the Diocese of Rochester and, in 2003, graduated from the Finger Lakes School of Massage in Ithaca.
Sister Theiss joined the Sisters of St. Joseph in 1966. She taught elementary and high school grades in the dioceses of Syracuse and Albany. In the Rochester Diocese, she served in parish ministry and religious education in Elmira Heights and Watkins Glen. At the time of her death, she was a massage therapist at Spirit Centered Body Works in Johnson City and at St. Joseph’s Provincial House.
She was predeceased by her brother, Paul, and friend, Father David Bonin. She is survived by her sister, Maura (Bill) Post of Horseheads; her niece, Laurie, and nephews, Christopher, Michael and Richard; and her sisters at the Spiritual Center in Windsor and in the congregation.
Her funeral liturgy was held April 2, 2007, in the chapel of St. Joseph’s Provincial House with interment in Our Lady Queen of Virgins Cemetery on the Provincial House grounds.
