Sister Catherine Quigley, SSJ, 96

Sister of St. Joseph Catherine Quigley, SSJ (formerly Sister John Joseph), died June 10, 2008, at the congregation’s motherhouse. She was 96 years old.

She entered the congregation in 1932 from her home parish of Immaculate Conception in Rochester, and earned a BE in 1947 and a BA in English in 1955, both from Nazareth College in Pittsford.

Sister Quigley began teaching in 1934 at St Patrick’s Cathedral School and remained a classroom teacher for nearly 40 years. She taught at Corpus Christi, Nazareth Hall, St. Ambrose and Blessed Sacrament, Rochester; St Mary, Canandaigua; St Francis de Sales, Geneva; and St John the Evangelist, Greece. In 1973, she moved to St Joseph’s Convent Infirmary where she was both patient and staff member. She visited the sick sisters and served as sacristan for many years.

She is survived by her nephews, Richard Hensler and Gerald Hensler; her nieces Kathleen (Max) Albertson and Maureen (Donald) Galvin; many grandnieces and grandnephews; and by her sisters in the congregation.

Her funeral liturgy was celebrated on June 13, 2008, in the motherhouse chapel with burial in Holy Sepulchre Cemetery.
