Sister Catherine Teresa Martin, SSJ, 102

Sister of St. Joseph Catherine Teresa Martin died July 7, 2014. She was 102.

She entered the congregation in 1931 from her home parish of Our Lady of Perpetual Help, Rochester. She received a B.E. from Nazareth College of Rochester in 1947 and M.A. in Religious Education from Providence College in 1952.

Beginning in 1933, Sister Martin taught in several schools including St. Peter & Paul, Elmira; St. Francis Xavier, Sacred Heart, Our Lady of Lourdes, St. Monica in Rochester; St. Mary, Auburn; and Immaculate Conception, Ithaca. For three years, she served as assistant director of novices for the congregation.

In 1966, Sister Martin was assigned to St. Joseph’s Hospital in Elmira as director of student guidance. Three years later, she went to Selma, Ala., to work in the business office of Good Samaritan Hospital. From 1970 through 1983, she managed the business office for the Fathers of St. Edmund and found time to organize the quilting efforts of the local women in "The Freedom Quilting Bee."

In 1983, Sister Martin moved to the motherhouse, where she provided secretarial services to the congregation for 14 years. She then became assistant editor of the newsletter, where she was fondly known as "the comma cop." Sister Martin retired from this position less than a year before her death

She is survived by her grandnephews, Mark (Susan) Fischer and Joseph (Michelle) Fischer; niece, Wanda Fischer; cousins, Linda Bennett and Kathy Klein; many good friends; and her sisters in the congregation.

Her funeral liturgy was celebrated in the motherhouse chapel on July 11, 2014, with burial in Holy Sepulchre Cemetery.
