Sister of St. Joseph Cora Marie Mitrano, who spent more than 60 years at Rochester’s Nazareth Academy, died April 4, 2022. She was 95 years old.
Sister Mitrano entered the congregation in 1944 from her home parish of St. Anthony of Padua, Rochester. She received a bachelor’s degree in education in 1951 and a bachelor’s degree in English and Italian in 1957, both from Nazareth College. In 1961, Sister Mitrano received a master’s degree in Italian from Middlebury College in Vermont.
She began her teaching career in 1947 at St. Alphonsus, Auburn. She also taught for three years at Holy Apostles, Rochester. In 1952, Sister Mitrano was assigned to teach at her alma mater, Nazareth Academy, where she remained for the rest of her professional life. She taught Italian and citizenship education for more than 35 years. In 1989, she took a position in the alumnae office, where she remained until her retirement in 2014. Even after retirement, she continued to volunteer for the Nazareth alumnae.
Sister Mitrano is survived by her sisters, Sister of St. Joseph Ann Regina Mitrano, and Frances (Eugene) Uttaro; brothers, Vincent P. Mitrano and Gerald A. (Barbara) Mitrano; several nieces, nephews; friends; and her sisters in the congregation.
Her funeral liturgy was celebrated at the motherhouse chapel April 8, 2022, with burial in Holy Sepulchre Cemetery.
