Sister Diane Edwards, SSJ, 78

Sister of St. Joseph Diane Edwards (formerly Sister Martin) died on July 15, 2013, at the age of 78.

Sister Edwards entered the congregation from her home parish of Immaculate Conception, Rochester, in 1954. She received a bachelor’s degree in 1972 and a master’s degree in education in 1976, both at Nazareth College of Rochester.

Sister Edwards taught at Mother of Sorrows, Greece; St. Augustine, St. Francis Xavier, St. Ambrose and Our Lady of Perpetual Help, Rochester; St. Peter & Paul, Elmira; St. Francis de Sales, Geneva; and St. Jerome, East Rochester. After more than 25 years in education, she was hired by Catholic Family Center in Rochester as a home support worker in the Star Program. In 1987 she became the librarian at Irondequoit’s Christ the King, where for two years she also returned to the classroom when needed.

From 1992 until her retirement in 2003, Sister Edwards served as a driver both at the motherhouse and at Nazareth Academy Convent, worked in the Alumnae Office at Nazareth Academy and responded to a family need. She retired to the motherhouse and joined the prayer ministry.

She is survived by her sister-in-law, Mary Ann Edwards; her nieces, Kelly Neifing, Shelly (David) Ley and Jenny Pitt; her nephew, Scott Edwards; and by her sisters in the congregation.

Her funeral liturgy was celebrated in the motherhouse chapel on July 19, 2013, with burial in Holy Sepulchre Cemetery.

Contributions in her memory may be made to the Sisters of St. Joseph Ministry Fund, 150 French Road Rochester, NY 14618.
